Day 6 was another heavy travelling day. Innsbruck, our final destination for the day is located 380 km away from Lauterbrunnen.
It was another scenic drive with a stopover in Lucerne, where the lake dominates the city’s landscape. However due to our long journey ahead we had to forego the boat trip around the lake and just settled for sceneries from the shore.
We have to admit that it was neither planned nor realised that we were suddenly in another country, Liechtenstein. It’s a small country between Switzerland and Austria and we only realised it after seeing a different country sign along the way. The border control for Austria was the only point where we were asked for our passport and driving license. My International Driving Permit helped convinced the officer that everything was fine.
Once we entered Austria, one thing quickly struck us. It is the Land of the Tunnels. Tunnel after tunnel greeted us along the way – literally tens of them and after a while we regretted not counting them as there were really a lot of them – round tunnels, flat squarish tunnels, tunnels with ‘windows’ as our kids named them, tunnels that are short, tunnels that are long – everything you can think of. After a while, tunnels that are ‘only’ 2-3 kilometers long are no longer long to us. In fact, we drove through the longest tunnel in our trip there on the way to Innsbruck; it was 14 kilometers long.
