We arrived at Innsbruck at about 3.30 pm without really knowing what to expect but there was a visitor information centre on the highway just before the exit junction into Innsbruck and managed to get some information on what to do.
After checking-in into Tautermann Hotel, where there’s a ‘valet’ for the car in the parking provided and the external of the hotel totally didn’t do justice to the interior, we headed for the city. It was much much more beautiful and charming inside that one would not have guessed from the outside. By the way, this was the only hotel for which we managed to officially get a 5 bed room and it was a great stopover due to that.
Anyway, back to the city – Innsbruck’s claim to fame is its historical ‘Old City’ which is full of old buildings that are well-preserved. The most popular amongst these is the Golden Roof. Apart from that a few other building from hundreds of years ago dotted the city street.
It’s also popular for Swarovski - the crystal maker.
Another interesting thing about the city is, from certain angle, the mountains serve as its background and that add a lot to the charm as well.
We spent a couple of hours walking around the city and ended the walk with a nice pizza and kebab dinner at Magic Pizza restaurant. It’s a Turkish restaurant specialising in Kebab and Pizza where all but 2 of the dishes are halal. The restaurant is located right in front of the Ottoburg, one of the famous old buildings. The food was good, service was excellent, the serving was generous and the price was relatively inexpensive – we paid EUR27 for 3 pizza slices (huge slices), 2 kebabs and drinks.
After dinner, we took a longer way walking back to the hotel along the river. Nice pedestrian-friendly walkway with nice people along the way.
Back at the hotel, it was a comfortable rest for all and the plan was to start early in the morning for what is yet to be our longest drive for a day. But that would be after breakfast which was included in the room rate. One interesting thing that many foreigners may not know is that the whole of Austria speaks Deutsch (German).
