London is well serviced by an extensive network of public transport. The underground trains known locally at the 'tube' is the most fastest and most convenient way to get around and coupled with the bus services, one can get anywhere in London. Underground stations are scattered throughout the city and the big Underground Logo clearly identify them. A tube map that shows all the stations and how they link to one another is widely available using which you can easily plan your trip.
The most economical way to use the tube is by purchasing a travelcard (day travel card for Zone 1 & 2) will cost GBP7.20 (if you are only travelling after 9.30am on any single day, then you can get the off-peak travelcard at only GBP5.60. Compared to a single trip within Zone 1 that will cost you up to GBP4. The tube fares are very child-friendly. Anyone below 11 years old travel free and those between 11-15 pays GBP1 for a day travelcard (zone 1-6) provided they travel with an adult.
Then come the Oyster card. It's basically a prepaid card where you pay GBP3 to deposit to get it and then you load it with credits (up to GBP90 at any one time). Then whenever you travel, just swipe/touch the Oyster card at the start and end of your journey and the fare will be deducted from the credit you have. Similar to Touch n Go huh.....well not really. You get huge discounts when you use Oyster (e.g. the GBP4 single trip above will only cost GBP1.60 on Oyster). The best part is the 'Daily Price Capping' feature, where in any one day, the deduction to your Oyster card will NEVER exceed what you would have paid had you purchase a travelcard. This is very useful when you are not sure whether you are only making 1 single trip today or you may be making more trips for those late night supper.
I guess, I've confused you enough but the bottom line is; get an Oyster Card if you are planning to travel on public transport in London. It'll save you money and time.
